Tinned Food Review – Part 3

We finally finished all of the tins!

I want to say that there were some leftover baby new potatoes from when we made the steak pie.  We had them the next morning fried with eggs.  I am not adverse to these.  In fact, they were quite firm for a tinned food product and potatoes can be flavored with anything.  They are a useful item to have in the cupboard.

The next tin we opened was the chicken in white sauce.  I had looked at recipes for making chicken in white sauce and there really isn’t much to it at all.  I opened the tin.

The first thing I noticed is that it smelled like chicken soup, so that was a good sign.  It tasted rather bland and there could have been more chicken pieces.  I decided to doctor it to make it more palatable, so I fried up some pancetta, an onion and some mushrooms.

I then added some dijon mustard and tipped the tin of chicken into the mix.  I always have dijon mustard in the van along with a few other condiments.

To me, anything in a thick sauce looks a bit odd to me, but it tasted quite good.

This was served on crushed baby new potatoes and green beans.  This could also be served on rice or pasta or instant mashed potatoes.

The next and last can we tried was the spicy chicken curry.  I didn’t have high hopes for this as the mild chicken curry wasn’t that great.

There was plenty of chicken, but it was not spicy, so I added extra chili flakes to jazz it up.  Although the curry looks quite thick here, it actually gets quite runny when it is heated up.  We served it with some mixed starters and mini naan breads.

We didn’t have rice as we decided that the starters and bread would be enough.  This was one can between us.  As Bob said, the starters and bread made the meal and it filled a hole.  However, it is not something we will be taking with us as it really isn’t worth it even though it is edible.  I have a jar of sauce and we can buy cooked chicken in a supermarket if we want a curry.  We will take some bread though and we can heat those up in the RidgeMonkey.  We also take the microwave rice that can be heated up in a pan.

So, the outcome is that we will take tinned steak, chilli con carne, and meatballs in gravy.  We can do without the chicken in white sauce as the meatballs are better value because you get more meat and are more versatile.  There isn’t anything we tried that didn’t taste better for adding extras to it.  I don’t see how anyone could eat these as they are.  These are emergency rations and are not something that we will be eating on a regular basis.  The idea is to grill outdoors and have fresh produce.
