After Puerto Lopez, we headed back down the coast to Ayangue. Our research told us that there was supposed to be good diving from there. There really isn’t much information about Ayangue, primarily because there really isn’t much to do there and there aren’t many places to stay.
Ayangue is a very small village with a very small and calm bay. It is perfect for families with small children. On the weekends the place is heaving. There are restaurants lined up all along the bay selling mainly seafood and is one of the cheapest places to eat fresh ‘lobsters’ and langoustines.
During the week the place is pretty much deserted with only a few restaurants open for breakfast and lunch. Most of the beach restaurants close soon after 4pm. There were no restaurants open in the town after that hour.
As I stated, we came to do some diving and we went out with Ray Aguila Buceo. Bob will be writing about our diving experiences in another post. Conditions for diving were not ideal as far as visibility was concerned, but it was considerably better than our diving experience in Puerto Lopez. We saw the Blanco Christo, but it was not so blanco due to organisms taking hold. We need to wait until we get home before I can upload some photos that our guide took during our dive as we have them on disc.
Ayangue is great during the day, but at night there really is nothing to do. There are no bars or restaurants open in the evenings. We were booked here for 4 nights! We didn’t know! The day after we arrived we dived. After that, we spent the rest of our days mainly under a beach cabana or swimming in the bay. We ate breakfast at one of the beach bars as our accommodation didn’t provide breakfast. Lunch was a fresh fruit salad from one of the beach bars with some fresh pineapple juice or a cocktail. We waited as long as possible to eat fresh seafood for our dinner, around 4pm.
If you want some excitement, Ayangue will not be your place. There are other towns along the coast with better beaches and facilities. However, if you want to chill out for a couple of days and eat great seafood, then this is the place for you. Make sure you have a car so you can drive out of town to get dinner elsewhere.
