Camping La Isla – Picos de Europa, Spain

Camping La Isla was the first campsite I have ever been to and was our first camping trip with the dogs.  The bed for the van was still being made, so it was necessary to take the awning tent as this was also before we bought the pop-up tent.  This was two years ago.

The site is not large, but it has everything you need.  The staff are friendly and helpful.  We reserved a pitch prior to leaving the UK.  The site is very clean.  I had never been to a campsite before and was really impressed with the cleanliness of the site, if not with the cleanliness of some people!  There is a small pool, a restaurant/bar, bbq area, kiddies play area and a river runs through it, which is why we chose it.  There is also a large field attached to the site which was great to exercise the dogs first thing in the morning.

This was pretty much our view every day:

The site is located 2.5k from Potes, the nearest town.  Although we had bikes, we didn’t have a dog carrier as the dogs trashed it not long before we went away and there wasn’t time to get another one.  Bob would cycle into town now and again for supplies, or we would walk with the dogs as there was a pavement the whole way into town.

The Picos de Europa is an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Cantabrian  Mountain Range.  We were able to see this in the distance when we walked The Camino.  I read an article about the Picos in The Guardian online and only recently found a newspaper clipping I saved many years ago for my Spain file.  As we had not long walked The Camino, we thought camping in Spain our first time in the van would be great.  Besides, we can get by in Spanish fine.

We met some lovely people, the scenery is stunning, and the food was really good, even on the site.  Dogs are welcome and we made great use of the river as we hit a heat wave!  We were only going to stay 7 nights, but we stayed 12 nights as we loved the area so much.  There are many walks in this area and quite a few were close to the site.  We would get up early and go to bed late as there is so much to do and see.

We highly recommend this site and the area and will hopefully be back again one day.
